Renovating, Reusing, and Reimagining for a Sustainable Future

Chengdu is prioritizing sustainability, frugality, and environmental responsibility in its preparations for the World Games. The city has adopted a "renovate or reuse" approach for its 27 competition venues, rather than constructing new facilities. This strategy includes repurposing temporary structures from previous events, such as the 2024 ITTF Mixed Team World Cup, to host different sports.

The focus on sustainability extends to the materials and systems used in venue upgrades. Environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and reusable components are being implemented to minimize carbon emissions and ensure the venues remain useful after the Games.

The renovation of existing facilities, like the 50-year-old Chengdu North Sports Center, exemplifies this approach. The center, now equipped to host dance sport events, features energy-saving lighting and permeable concrete paving to reduce energy consumption and lower surface temperatures.

The integration of competitions into the "park city" development vision is also a key element. Fifteen venues are located outdoors, including several within parks and public waterways. Temporary structures, such as tents and stands, are being used at locations like Guixi Ecological Park, with plans to dismantle them after the events to restore the park to its original condition.

At Chengdu Sport University, sustainability measures include leasing equipment like power units, sound systems, and shelters to reduce costs and emissions. The university is also utilizing foldable furniture and convertible spaces to ensure the venue's adaptability for long-term use. Equipment such as LED screens and lighting systems will be repurposed for school training after the Games.

Utilizing foldable furniture and adaptable spaces maximizes efficiency while minimizing waste. That's smart planning!

This 'renovate or reuse' strategy feels more about saving money than providing the best facilities for the athletes.

What about the environmental impact of transporting all those old structures? Using new, local materials could be more efficient.

Repurposing old structures might not fulfill the specific needs of various sports events adequately.

Chengdu's approach seems like a cheap way to host the World Games. Aren't we aiming for excellence, not just frugality?
