China Reaffirms Authority Over Dalai Lama Reincarnation

The chairman of the Xizang autonomous region stated that the Chinese central government possesses the ultimate decision-making authority regarding the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama. This position is also supported by a large number of followers of Tibetan Buddhism.

The title of Dalai Lama has been conferred by the central government on all successors, beginning with the 5th Dalai Lama. This historical practice is the foundation of the religious status and legitimacy of the Dalai Lama title.

The process of reincarnation for living Buddhas adheres to specific religious rituals and historical traditions. The legitimacy of the Dalai Lama title, in particular, originates from the central government, as stated by the chairman of Xizang during a press conference.

The current Dalai Lama has, on occasion, expressed views on his own reincarnation, including the possibility of choosing his successor. However, the chairman emphasized that the reincarnation process is not solely determined by the Dalai Lama himself. The process must adhere to the principle of domestic search, drawing lots from a golden urn, and obtaining approval from the central government, while also complying with national laws.

According to the deputy director of the Xizang Academy of Social Sciences' Institute of Religion, the Dalai Lama's statements regarding his reincarnation are attempts to circumvent the central government's approval, a crucial step in the reincarnation process. These statements are seen as a disregard for the historical lineage of the Dalai Lama and its authority within the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The issue of reincarnation should not be used to attract public attention.

The reincarnation process involves historical customs and religious rituals that require reporting to and approval from the central government. Therefore, the Dalai Lama's claims are viewed as challenges to the central government's ultimate authority in this matter.
