The People's Liberation Army recently released footage of its unmanned reconnaissance planes, showcasing collaboration between drone operators and intelligence officers in locating foreign warships. The documentary, "Forging Ahead," featured WZ-7 and WZ-10 drones.
The WZ-7 and WZ-10, developed by Aviation Industry Corp of China, are high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles. The footage showed the brigade receiving an order to search for a "hostile warship." The WZ-10 transmitted data for analysis, identifying a potential foreign ship. The WZ-7 then investigated further, relaying coordinates. Intelligence officers confirmed the target, reporting it to an intelligence platform. The video concluded with a missile launch vehicle preparing for launch.
The drone brigade frequently conducts flights over the western Pacific Ocean. The WZ-7, formerly Xianglong, is considered China's equivalent to the US's RQ-4 Global Hawk, with a unique "joined tandem wing" design. Equipped with advanced sensors, it provides imagery intelligence. It is one of only two unmanned aircraft globally capable of operating freely within passenger airliner airspaces. The WZ-10, for electronic reconnaissance, complements the WZ-7.

Using drones to locate foreign warships is just escalatory and provocative. It’s not the way to foster peace.

What’s next? Are they going to start launching missiles at foreign vessels? This is insane.

Why are they broadcasting their military capabilities? This is deeply concerning for international relations.

The development of these drones sends a wrong message to the world. It's all about power projection.
