On Friday afternoon, a shooting occurred in Atlanta near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University campuses. A police officer responding to reports of an active shooter was killed.
Authorities found the suspect with gunshot wounds on the second floor of a building that housed a CVS Pharmacy. The suspect died at the scene from his injuries, according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.
The shooting began with 911 calls reporting an active shooter around 4:50 p.m. near the CDC campus. Emory University issued an alert about an active shooter situation on its campus. Both Emory and the CDC's Roybal campus were locked down. Responding officers found a critically injured DeKalb County officer, who later died at Emory University Hospital.
Officers heard gunfire inside a CVS at a retail and apartment complex and entered the building to locate the shooter. The suspect was found on the second floor. It is unclear if the suspect's wounds were self-inflicted or from police gunfire. The suspect's identity has not been released.
The DeKalb County police officer who died was identified as David Rose, 33. He had recently graduated from the police academy. He leaves behind a wife and two children, with one on the way. No civilians were injured in the shooting. Four other individuals sought medical attention for stress and anxiety symptoms. Four CDC buildings were hit during the shooting, but no injuries were reported there.
Investigators are examining whether rounds fired at the CDC buildings were intentional. Officials are in the preliminary stages of investigating the suspect's motive. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
Governor Brian Kemp condemned the shooting, the second in the state within a week. U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock expressed his devastation and offered prayers. FBI Director Kash Patel stated the agency would support Georgia officials. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens emphasized the need for a national conversation about gun violence.
The shooting occurred two days after an active-duty soldier wounded five service members at Fort Stewart. The soldier, Quornelius Radford, is believed to have opened fire with a personal handgun. Three of the injured have been released from the hospital, and the remaining two are expected to recover. The cause of the shooting is still under investigation.

This is infuriating. The suspect needs to be identified quickly and held accountable.

How many more warnings do we need before our elected leaders take the next big step?

It should be considered that this has to be a traumatic event, and the city has my support in recovery.
