On August 7, 2025, a woman carrying a child struggled to navigate a flooded road in Zhengzhou, which prompted the local government to halt business operations and outdoor activities due to severe rainstorms. Reports from Chinese state media indicate that heavy rainfall in Gansu province's Yuzhong County has led to at least 10 deaths and left 33 people unaccounted for, while a landslide occurred in the nearby mountainous regions around Lanzhou.
The excessive rainfall caused power outages and disrupted telecommunications, affecting around 4,000 residents across four separate villages in the Xinglong Mountain area. Following a landslide in Maliantan village late Thursday, three individuals are currently reported missing. By early Friday, local authorities confirmed that rainfall in the region reached a staggering 195 millimeters (7.7 inches).
Various regions throughout China are facing the consequences of relentless rainfall. In Guangzhou, seven fatalities and several injuries have been reported after a landslide triggered by flooding buried homes in the Baiyun district. In response to similar flooding concerns in Zhengzhou, where catastrophic flood events claimed at least 292 lives in 2021, local authorities have proactively closed schools, offices, factories, and restricted traffic in certain parts of the city.

So many lives lost and missing people, yet what do authorities really do to prevent this? It’s the same cycle every year.

The media is blowing this out of proportion. It's just a bit of rain; people need to stop panicking.

It’s disappointing that there’s no focus on improving building codes in high-risk flooding areas. This is negligence!

Heartbreaking to hear about the lives lost. The government is doing the right thing by taking precautionary measures.
