On February 7, a 10-year-old Shiba Inu named James Jr. visited the Kyoto Animal Welfare Center to present a list of donations, highlighting his role as the mascot of an animal welfare campaign gaining national traction. Residing with Miwa Takaya in the Arashiyama district, James Jr. has become a symbol of hope and advocacy for animal welfare, attending events across the country to raise awareness and funds.
Once a timid and resigned shelter dog, James Jr. entered foster care after being abandoned by his non-Japanese owner. Miwa Takaya, a 62-year-old Kyoto resident, took him in after losing her own shelter dog, also named James. Motivated by her desire to assist animals in need following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Takaya transformed James Jr. into a campaign ambassador, following in her late dog's footsteps.
James Jr. is not only a cherished pet but also an active community member who engages in fundraising activities. Merchandise featuring his likeness, including calendars and transparent files, is sold to support the Kyoto Animal Welfare Center, with this year's donations reaching 500,000 yen. These funds are primarily allocated for the education and management of the animals the center protects.
Local support for James Jr.'s activities is abundant, including backing from the Donke-in temple, which helped sell promotional products during a special event. The temple's head priest emphasized the equality of human and animal lives, expressing a desire to extend help through their efforts.
James Jr.'s charm extends to broadcasting, as he regularly features on FM Kyoto, delighting listeners with his comforting barks. Additionally, he serves as a tourism ambassador for Iwakuni, promoting local attractions like the Kintaikyo bridge and engaging with schoolchildren to raise awareness about animal welfare.
As James Jr. ages, Takaya is dedicated to monitoring his health while they continue their mission to support shelter pets in need of loving homes. Iwakuni's mayor praised James Jr. as a shining example of shelter dogs' potential to uplift communities and spread joy.

Can we focus on real change instead of cute dog stories? Enough of the distractions!

While it's heartwarming, this kind of attention distracts from the real systemic problems in animal welfare.

I can't take this seriously when dog merchandise is being sold. It's about the animals, not about the profits.
