In a tragic incident in northwest China's Gansu province, ten individuals have lost their lives, and 33 others are still unaccounted for following severe flash floods and mudslides. According to reports from state media on August 8, this disaster is part of a troubling trend of extreme weather occurrences in the region, particularly prevalent during the summer months when varying climates across the country can lead to such calamities.
In light of this disaster, President Xi Jinping has called for urgent action to locate and rescue those missing. State broadcaster CCTV reported that he instructed local authorities to avoid complacency and to enhance their efforts in assessing and mitigating the risks posed by frequent extreme weather events. Continuous heavy rainfall that began on August 7 initiated the flash floods that devastated the area, leading to the confirmed death toll.

Avoiding complacency? That's not reassuring. We need proactive measures, not reactive ones. Where are the early warning systems and robust infrastructure?

The government's response time is quicker than ever to the disasters in the regions and its good that the victims have been provided with food and first aid.

This is a direct result of climate change and ignoring environmental protections. We need to hold decision-makers accountable.
