On Friday, August 8th, southern Japan experienced record rainfall, prompting evacuation orders and warnings of potential landslides from local authorities. The heavy downpour occurred after a period of extreme heat across much of the country.
Footage from television broadcasts depicted rapidly flowing, muddy water overflowing riverbanks and flooding homes within the Kagoshima region.
Reports from local media indicated that Kirishima city, also in Kagoshima, received a record-breaking 500mm of rain within a 24-hour period ending at 5 am local time. This amount was double the average rainfall typically seen for the entire month of August.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) described the region as experiencing unprecedented heavy rains. However, the agency subsequently lowered its highest alert level for heavy rain as the intensity of the downpour began to subside.

Where's the proof? I'll believe it when I see independent verification of damages.

That's got to be devastating for those affected. Prayers for their safety and recovery.

The media is always sensationalizing things. Probably not as bad as they say.
