Villarreal announced the signing of Ghanaian international Thomas Partey on a free transfer. The defensive midfielder's contract with Arsenal had recently expired.
The 32-year-old has agreed to a one-season contract and is expected to join Villarreal's training sessions on Friday.
Partey is currently facing legal proceedings in England. He was charged last month with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault. The allegations stem from incidents that occurred between April 2021 and June 2022.
Villarreal released a statement acknowledging the ongoing legal situation. The club emphasized its respect for the presumption of innocence and stated that it would await the court's verdict. Due to British law, the club will not be commenting further on the matter.
Prior to this move, Partey played 167 games for Arsenal, scoring nine goals. He joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020.
Villarreal recently played a pre-season friendly against Arsenal, winning 3-2. Their LaLiga season will commence on August 16th with a home match against Real Oviedo.

He is innocent until proven guilty. Let's not ruin the man's career before he has a chance to defend himself.

I'm boycotting any Villarreal game until this is reversed.

Money talks, and Villarreal's owners are clearly blinded by it. Shameful.

It's a one-year contract. They are trying to give him the chance to play football.

If proven innocent, he deserves a chance. This is a good opportunity for him.
