Following a call from President Donald Trump for a new census that would exclude illegal immigrants, the Department of Commerce has announced its intention to adjust its approach. The department stated it would "immediately" change course to "reflect the number of legal residents in the United States."
Trump had previously instructed the Department of Commerce to begin work on a revised census. This new census would not include illegal immigrants in its count. The former president indicated that the new census would utilize modern technology and data from the 2024 Presidential Election.
A spokesperson for the Department of Commerce confirmed that the Census Bureau would adhere to the president's directive. The spokesperson also mentioned the adoption of modern technology to improve data analysis and ensure an accurate reflection of the legal resident population.
This is not the first time Trump has sought to exclude illegal immigrants from the census. In 2020, he issued a presidential memorandum with similar instructions to the Commerce Department. He argued that including those unlawfully in the country would undermine the system of government. However, this effort was blocked by a federal court. Trump also attempted to add a citizenship question to the census form, but this was also blocked by the Supreme Court.

It’s time for the government to prioritize the needs of citizens and legal residents over those here illegally.

I support any move that seeks to improve our immigration system. Counting only legal residents is a step forward.

Trump’s agenda is harmful. It’s time to focus on unity and inclusion instead of exclusion.

It’s absurd to think we can accurately understand our communities by excluding a segment of them.

I support this decision. Accurate representation for legal residents is essential for fair resource allocation.
