Toronto FC has acquired Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a deal potentially worth up to US$9-million. The initial transfer cost is US$8-million, with an additional US$1-million in conditional payments based on performance. Colorado will also retain a percentage of any future transfer or trade involving the player.
Mihailovic joins Toronto as a designated player, signing a 3 1/2-year contract that extends through the end of 2028, with an option for the club to extend it through 2029. Toronto's general manager, Jason Hernandez, highlighted the signing as a significant moment, emphasizing the ownership's commitment to winning and identifying Mihailovic as a key piece for the team's transformation.
The club also announced the acquisition of US$175,000 in general allocation money from the Portland Timbers in exchange for a 2025 international roster slot. This move comes amidst other high-profile signings in Major League Soccer this week.
Mihailovic is expected to significantly improve Toronto's attack, which currently ranks low in the league. He is known for his ability to score and create goals. The 26-year-old has a strong professional record, including goals and assists in his career.
Since joining Colorado in January 2024, Mihailovic has been a key player, setting a club record for goal contributions in his first season. He has continued to perform well this year.
Mihailovic expressed his excitement about joining Toronto FC, citing the club's history, potential, and the support from fans. He also mentioned the ambition of the organization and the vision shared by the general manager and coach.
Mihailovic's skills include being a reliable penalty-taker and delivering dangerous set-pieces. He also has a knack for finding opportunities in opposing defenses.
Toronto has been without a designated player since the buyout of contracts for Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi. The team's current leading goal scorer is Theo Corbeanu, and Deybi Flores leads in assists.
Mihailovic's salary with the Rapids was considered a bargain compared to the previous designated players. He will wear the number 10 jersey for Toronto.
This marks Mihailovic's fifth team and his second in Canada. He previously played for CF Montreal, where he set a club record for assists in 2021. Before that, he played for the Chicago Fire. He also had a stint with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. Mihailovic has also represented the U.S. national team.

This sounds more like a publicity stunt than a real strategy to improve the team. Where’s the vision?

This feels like a desperate move. Toronto FC should be looking at more balanced strategies instead of pouring money into one player.

Mihailovic's record might be good, but MLS is filled with players who filled the stats sheet without actually contributing to wins.
