Toronto FC Acquires Djordje Mihailovic in Bid to Revive Attack

Toronto FC has acquired Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a deal potentially worth up to US$9-million. The initial transfer cost is US$8-million, with an additional US$1-million in conditional payments based on performance. Colorado will also retain a percentage of any future transfer or trade involving the player.

Mihailovic joins Toronto as a designated player, signing a 3 1/2-year contract that extends through the end of 2028, with an option for the club to extend it through 2029. Toronto's general manager, Jason Hernandez, highlighted the signing as a significant moment, emphasizing the ownership's commitment to winning and identifying Mihailovic as a key piece for the team's transformation.

The club also announced the acquisition of US$175,000 in general allocation money from the Portland Timbers in exchange for a 2025 international roster slot. This move comes amidst other high-profile signings in Major League Soccer this week.

This marks Mihailovic's fifth team and his second in Canada. He previously played for CF Montreal, where he set a club record for assists in 2021. Before that, he played for the Chicago Fire. He also had a stint with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. Mihailovic has also represented the U.S. national team.
