Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, an NBA champion and superstar, has always cherished his roots. He recently received the key to the city of Hamilton from Mayor Andrea Horwath during a public rally at Hamilton Stadium. The mayor also announced that a street would be named in his honor. This recognition followed an incredible 2024-25 season where he led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a thrilling seven-game victory over the Indiana Pacers, securing the league championship.
Gilgeous-Alexander expressed his pride in representing Hamilton, sharing how he often told people worldwide that he was from the city. He highlighted the unique grit, determination, pride, and energy of Hamiltonians, qualities he carries with him. The news of receiving the key to the city and a street named after him brought him immense joy.
He was also honored during a CFL game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the B.C. Lions at Hamilton Stadium. Seeing the thousands of people, including many children wearing his jersey, deeply moved him. He mentioned how special it was to be on the field in that capacity, having spent time there growing up. He described it as a full-circle moment, emphasizing the overwhelming support he feels from his hometown, regardless of where he is in the world.
Rowan Barrett, the executive vice-president and general manager of Canada’s national men’s team, also spoke at the rally. Ron Foxcroft, a longtime basketball official, presented Gilgeous-Alexander with a gold basketball.
The past season was a remarkable one for the 6-foot-6, 195-pound Gilgeous-Alexander. He not only led the Thunder to their first NBA title but also earned the Finals MVP and regular season MVP titles, while also winning the league scoring title. He became only the fourth player to achieve this feat in a single season.
Mayor Horwath expressed the city's pride in Gilgeous-Alexander's achievements, stating that Hamilton was on Cloud 9. She highlighted the city's greatness and the significance of his accomplishments.
Following the season, Gilgeous-Alexander signed a four-year, US$285-million contract extension with the Thunder, making him the highest-paid player in the NBA. He also signed a multi-year extension with Converse, becoming the creative director of Converse Basketball. This deal, reportedly worth US$15-million annually, came after O’Neal pursued the Canadian to sign with Reebok. Gilgeous-Alexander is also the cover athlete of NBA 2K26.
Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on his journey, recalling that he didn't make his high school basketball team in the ninth grade. He acknowledged that hard work doesn't always yield the desired results, but he was grateful for the opportunity to achieve his dreams. He considers his success a blessing and strives to cherish every moment.

Seems a little premature. One championship doesn't warrant all this praise.
