Emory Medical Student Sues University Over Gaza Remarks, Alleging Discrimination

Umaymah Mohammad, an Emory University medical student, is suing the university, alleging discrimination under Title VI and state law. The lawsuit, filed by CAIR-GA, claims Emory intentionally discriminated against Mohammad during disciplinary proceedings related to her remarks about Israel and Gaza.

The suit seeks accountability and could impact how student activists are treated. It alleges procedural irregularities in the investigation and hearing, and that Emory's own free expression committee was ignored. Mohammad was suspended for a year.

The lawsuit also references a prior settlement with the Department of Education regarding a hostile environment for Palestinian, Muslim, and Arab students. An additional complaint against Mohammad has been filed. The case comes as Title VI is being used to address antisemitism on campuses. Attorneys emphasize the importance of using Title VI to seek justice and protect student activism.
