In recent years, the size and prevalence of rats in the UK have become a growing concern, as pest control experts indicate that rodents comparable to the size of cats are becoming more common. David Parnell, who has dedicated two decades to pest management, shared that the frequency of his rat-related call-outs has surged from a couple of incidents per week to between eight and ten. These rodents are infiltrating homes, often through neglected drainage systems, with one particularly alarming case involving a rat that made its way two storeys up a drainpipe and exited through a toilet. Parnell highlights that these rodents are getting larger, largely due to a combination of genetic factors and the accessibility of high-fat takeaway remnants.
The surge of rats is attributed to a "perfect storm" of conditions, according to Parnell, including insufficient waste management practices, a rising culture of takeout dining, fragile sewer infrastructure, and lapses in maintenance by water companies. He criticizes societal complacency concerning hygiene and waste disposal as contributing to this rodent crisis, which he describes as unprecedented. Parnell notices an alarming trend where properties such as HMOs and council estates are increasingly seeing waste left outside, creating an ideal environment for rats to thrive.
Looking ahead, Parnell expresses concern that the situation will only deteriorate as pest controllers face limitations in their use of rodenticides due to resistance built up in rat populations. He stresses the importance of addressing the underlying issues, calling on water companies to take accountability for failing drainage systems and urging the public to improve their waste disposal habits. Parnell cautions that unless significant changes are made—like avoiding littering, properly cleaning up after gatherings, and recycling correctly—the UK's rat problem will escalate dramatically.

Perfect storm" is a great way to put it. Let's hope this article triggers some proactive measures.

Seriously, the UK's hygiene has gone downhill. This is a national embarrassment.

I'm all for more recycling programs, these rats prove we're dealing with the aftermath of inaction.

Maybe we should all be taking steps to reduce waste and take care of our surroundings.
