Hot Weather Expected in the UK This Weekend with North/South Divide

The UK is preparing for a scorching weekend with predictions of temperatures soaring over 30 degrees Celsius, particularly after experiencing several heatwaves in July. According to weather forecasters, this hot spell is expected to hit from 12 PM on August 14 until 6 PM on August 16, creating a stark division in temperature across the country.

Forecasts suggest that Gloucester will be the warmest city, reaching a blistering 32C. Additionally, temperature readings between 30C and 31C are anticipated across 29 other cities in the southern and Midlands regions, which include Bath, Birmingham, and London amongst others. Meanwhile, the northeastern part of England and Wales will likely see temperatures ranging from 25C to 29C, whereas Northern Ireland and eastern Scotland will sit at 20C to 24C. Conversely, the northwestern regions of England and southwestern Scotland are expected to be cooler, hovering between 17C and 19C, with the coldest spots in northwestern Scotland, where temperatures may dip to between 14C and 16C.

The Met Office detailed that this weather pattern will begin with a division across the country, characterized by unpredictable weather in the north, which may experience heavy rain and strong winds, while the south is expected to enjoy predominantly dry and sunny conditions. The chances of rain in the south remain minimal but temperatures are expected to align more closely with average in the northern regions initially. As August progresses, there is a likelihood of high-pressure systems taking charge, leading to more stable and warmer conditions throughout the UK, albeit with intermittent unsettled weather expected toward the latter part of the period.

Today’s forecast indicates a combination of sunshine and showers, primarily affecting northern and central areas, where some heavier showers alongside isolated thunderstorms could occur. The south will generally remain dry with less wind than the previous day, although blustery conditions may persist. Tonight, while most areas are expected to remain dry with clear skies, northern Scotland may encounter cloudier conditions with occasional showers. Cooler temperatures are favored compared to previous nights, and winds should ease. Moving into Wednesday, conditions are set to be predominantly dry with varying cloud coverage. However, the northern regions will continue to experience rain, with milder winds bringing near-average temperatures. As the week progresses from Thursday to Saturday, more cloudy weather is predicted on Thursday along with intermittent rain for some areas. Showers are likely to linger in the north, and blustery conditions may re-emerge towards the weekend.
