Former NFL Player LeShon Johnson Convicted on Dogfighting Charges After Seizure of 190 Dogs

LeShon Johnson, a former running back in the NFL, has been found guilty of various dogfighting charges after a significant federal investigation led to the confiscation of 190 pit-bull-type dogs from his property, marking the largest number seized from a single individual in a federal case to date. The charges stemmed from a federal trial in Oklahoma, where after five days of proceedings, jurors convicted Johnson on six out of twenty-three counts linked to his operation of a prominent dogfighting kennel.

Now 54 and residing in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Johnson has a history of legal troubles concerning dogfighting, having previously pleaded guilty to state charges in 2004. With a potential sentence of up to five years on each count and fines reaching $250,000 per charge, he remains free until sentencing is set. His attorney, Billy Coyle, indicated that Johnson plans to appeal the verdict, arguing that while some of the dogs might have been used for fighting, it was done without his consent. Johnson has expressed his fondness for American pit bull terriers, attempting to distance himself from the portrayal of a major criminal in the dogfighting context.

Investigators have provided evidence suggesting Johnson participated in systematic breeding of dogs recognized in the fighting community, specifically those touted as “champions” and “grand champions.” The breeding operation, known as Mal Kant Kennels, was found to be involved in promoting and selling fighting dogs and their rights, allegedly netting Johnson significant profits over several years. During the trial, graphic materials showcasing dogfighting practices were presented to jurors, emphasizing the brutal reality of his actions.

The case has drawn comparisons to the notorious dogfighting scandal of Michael Vick, another former NFL player who faced similar repercussions. Unlike Vick, who served time in prison for his involvement, Johnson's situation is still developing, as he faces not only legal consequences but also a renewed scrutiny of how celebrity athletes can impact the public perception of animal welfare issues.

Wishing to appeal shows he has no remorse. It’s time to send a clear message that this won’t be tolerated!

I think it's a shame people are so quick to demonize. We don’t know all the details about how he was involved.

Dogfighting is awful, but we should look at mental health and other deeper issues. Let’s not just vilify him!

As a former NFL player, he should know better. He had the chance to be a role model, but instead he chose cruelty.

He was breeding dogs for violence. That’s not love; that’s exploitation. He should feel ashamed!
