On July 29, 2025, a Su-30 fighter jet participated in combat readiness patrols conducted by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command. These patrols took place in the waters and airspace surrounding the territorial waters of China's Huangyan Dao in the South China Sea.
The PLA Southern Theater Command organized naval and air forces to conduct these combat readiness patrols. The patrols involved a variety of advanced military assets.
The video released by the PLA Southern Theater Command showcased several types of warships and warplanes. These included the Type 052D destroyer, Type 054A frigate, Type 903A replenishment ship, Z-9 shipborne helicopter, J-16 fighter jet, Su-30 fighter jet, and H-6K bomber. The H-6K bomber was observed carrying the YJ-12 supersonic anti-ship missile.
Since the beginning of July, the theater command has increased its patrols and vigilance in the waters and airspace around Huangyan Dao. This action aims to strengthen control over the maritime and aerial areas, defend national sovereignty and security, and maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.

This type of militarization only breeds mistrust among nations. Diplomacy should be the priority.

Is the PLA Southern Theater Command prepared for the backlash these patrols will inevitably bring?
