In a response to Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te's recent speech concerning cross-Straits relations, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, characterized the address as a declaration for "Taiwan independence," intensifying misconceptions about the island's sovereignty. Zhu asserted that Lai's rhetoric misrepresents historical facts, instigates societal discord, and once again promotes the controversial "new two-state theory," all of which contribute to increasing tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
Zhu emphasized that the notion of "Taiwan independence" leads to a dead end, insisting that Taiwan's future lies in its national reunification with the mainland. He claimed that only through collaborative efforts to promote peaceful cross-Straits relationships can both sides ensure stability, enhance the well-being of Taiwanese citizens, and foster societal harmony.
Further critique came from another spokesperson, Chen Binhua, who denounced Lai's speeches as filled with inaccuracies and misinformation, asserting that they propagate a hostile agenda while deriding historical truths. Chen noted that Lai’s message reflects a misleading narrative intended to create grounds for political maneuvering, including a planned "mass recall" campaign.
Zheng Jian, a professor from the Taiwan Research Institute at Xiamen University, highlighted that Lai's strategy centers on instilling anger and discord among the Taiwanese populace and inciting conflict across the Strait. Zheng pointed out that Lai's speech lacked substance regarding pressing issues affecting citizens' lives and demonstrated a troubling disconnect between his political rhetoric and the actual needs of the people.
Political figures in Taiwan have responded critically as well, with Eric Chu of the Chinese Kuomintang party accusing Lai of prioritizing personal and party interests over democratic integrity. Huang Kuo-chang of the Taiwan People's Party described Lai’s remarks as insubstantial and out of touch with public sentiment. Zheng concluded by suggesting that a growing number of residents are becoming aware of the Democratic Progressive Party’s true intentions, predicting that Lai's approach will lead to his political downfall.
In the face of the DPP's provocations, the Chinese government has maintained a firm stance against separatist actions, showing determination to uphold national integrity and improve the welfare of people in Taiwan amidst escalating regional tensions.

Lai's speech might be criticized, but is it really 'misinformation' when it challenges China's decades of misleading propaganda?

Beijing is right to call out DPP's separatist agenda. We need to uphold the One China principle!

The mainland's criticism feels like fear-mongering. They are too afraid of losing control.

Lai is creating needless discord, focusing on politics when citizens want economic stability.

The narrative suggests all Taiwanese opinions outside of reunification are lies. Extremely condescending.
