Trump Tightens Deadline for Russia to End Ukraine War, Threatens Sanctions

President Donald Trump has significantly shortened the timeframe for Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. The original deadline of 50 days has been reduced to a window of just 10 to 12 days. Trump has warned that if peace is not achieved by August 7 to 9, he will implement strong economic penalties.

During a visit to Scotland, Trump voiced his frustration over the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. Ukraine's air force reported a recent assault involving hundreds of drones and various missiles, highlighting the escalating violence despite international pressure.

Trump initially stated on July 14 that he would impose "severe tariffs" on Russia if a peace agreement wasn't reached by early September. However, he has since stated that waiting is pointless, citing a lack of progress. He emphasized the need for a deal to prevent further loss of life. The revised plan is expected to include both direct sanctions on Russia and secondary tariffs targeting its trading partners, with a formal announcement anticipated this week.

Trump also criticized Putin's actions in the war, pointing out the contradiction between talking about peace and bombing civilians. He expressed his disappointment in Putin and dismissed the idea of meeting with him to discuss a ceasefire. While hardening his stance, Trump also expressed personal regret over the potential impact on ordinary Russians, stating his affection for the Russian people.

There has been no immediate response from the Kremlin. Ukraine, however, has welcomed Trump's tougher approach. Andrii Yermak, chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that the shortened deadline sends the correct message, emphasizing that Putin responds to strength. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, the war continues to escalate without any signs of a breakthrough.
