Female Officers on the Front Lines of China's Anti-Drug Fight

On March 5th, the female investigation unit of the Dehong Border Administration Detachment participated in police tactical training in Dehong, Yunnan province.

Ren Shasha, a 32-year-old officer, understands the intricacies of anti-drug operations. She recognizes the value of disguises, such as wearing an apron and carrying sunflower seeds, and the advantages female officers have in remaining inconspicuous to criminals.

Ren's team, established in 2015, holds the distinction of being the first all-female anti-drug unit within China's national border defense system. Ren noted that the team has grown from its initial three officers to eight. Female officers often excel in tasks requiring disguise, surveillance, and tracking, leading to successful outcomes.

In a recent operation, the team received information about a potential drug deal in a parking lot in Mangshi city, located in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture. Given its proximity to the Golden Triangle, Yunnan province is a key area in combating the flow of illegal drugs.

During the operation, Ren disguised herself as a restaurant worker, positioning herself near the parking lot entrance. She wore an apron, bought sunflower seeds, and engaged in casual conversation to appear authentic. After hours of observation, a white car entered the lot, and the occupants began moving a tire. The team then moved in to make the arrest. Over 30 kilograms of heroin, a handgun, and ammunition were seized.

The arrest marks the beginning of a lengthy legal process. Obtaining arrest warrants can take a month, followed by approximately two months to gather evidence for prosecutors. The entire process, including the trial, can take at least six months, highlighting the importance of catching suspects in the act.
