During a goodwill visit to Switzerland from Monday to Thursday, Zhao Leji, the chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, advocated for the high-level advancement of the innovative strategic partnership between China and Switzerland. Noting that Switzerland was among the first Western nations to establish diplomatic relations with China 75 years ago, Zhao highlighted the cooperative spirit that has characterized the relationship, underscoring principles of equality, innovation, and mutual benefit.
Zhao expressed China's readiness to work with Switzerland to implement agreements made by both countries' leaders, aiming to further enhance their strategic partnership. He stressed that respect and trust are essential for the lasting stability of their bilateral relationship and expressed a desire for more Swiss leaders and parliamentarians to visit China for a comprehensive understanding of the nation.
The top legislator emphasized the importance of respecting each other's core interests and concerns as vital to fostering strong relations. He appreciated Switzerland's eagerness to expand cooperation and called for deeper engagement in various sectors, including economics, arts, sports, and education, to solidify public support for their friendship.
Zhao further noted Switzerland's pioneering role as the first continental European country to sign a free trade agreement with China, which has led to significant economic cooperation. He expressed the intent to upgrade this free trade agreement and enhance financial collaboration, encouraging Swiss investments in China.
Moreover, Zhao highlighted the need for both nations, recognized for their advocacy of peace and multilateralism, to work together to strengthen global governance, combat unilateralism, and uphold international trade laws. He pointed out the long-standing friendly relations between the NPC and the Swiss Federal Parliament as beneficial to bilateral ties and expressed a desire for increased legislative exchanges to facilitate cooperation.
In response, Swiss National Council President Maja Riniker acknowledged the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and expressed readiness to collaborate with the NPC on upgrading the free trade agreement and promoting sustainable development. President of the Council of States Andrea Caroni reaffirmed Switzerland's commitment to multilateralism and the significance of cooperation with China, anticipating deeper dialogues to foster mutual understanding and shared progress.

Switzerland should be wary of China's influence. This partnership could come at the cost of Swiss values and autonomy.

Upgrading a free trade agreement? China often uses trade deals to gain leverage and control. Time to re-evaluate the agreement.
