Marriage registrations in China experienced a significant decline in 2024. The Ministry of Civil Affairs reported approximately 6.11 million registrations, representing a 20.5% decrease compared to the previous year.
The marriage rate also saw a downturn. In 2024, the rate fell to 4.3 per 1,000 people. This figure reflects a decrease of 1.1 points from the prior year and is the lowest recorded since 2020, according to the 2024 Statistical Bulletin on the Development of Civil Affairs.
The age group with the highest number of marriages was individuals aged 25 to 29. This group accounted for 4.29 million marriages.
Alongside the decrease in marriages, there was a reduction in divorces. Approximately 3.50 million couples divorced last year, a decrease from the roughly 3.61 million divorces recorded in 2023.
