On Tuesday, a court in Shanghai sentenced a Japanese man to 12 years in prison on espionage charges. The Japanese government subsequently requested that China ensure transparency in the judicial proceedings.
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on Wednesday that China operates under the rule of law. He emphasized that the judicial authorities handled the case strictly according to legal procedures, ensuring the protection of the individual's lawful rights throughout the process.
Lin further asserted that the Japanese side should respect China's judicial sovereignty. He also urged Japan to educate and guide its citizens in China to abide by Chinese laws and regulations, and to refrain from engaging in any illegal or criminal activities.
According to NHK, the Japanese consulate general in Shanghai confirmed the court's sentencing of the Japanese man. The man, in his 50s, was taken into custody in Shanghai in December 2021. His trial commenced in October 2023, following his arrest and indictment.

It's essential to respect a country's sovereignty and its legal processes. Every nation has its laws.

This just escalates tensions between China and Japan. Is this really necessary in today’s world?

Is this really about rule of law, or is it just an excuse to suppress dissent? I have my doubts.
