A 28-year-old man from Springdale, Arkansas, named James Andrew McGann, was arrested on Wednesday. He has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection to the deaths of a married couple at Devil's Den State Park over the weekend. The couple was killed in front of their children. Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the crime.
McGann had been hired as a teacher candidate by Springdale public schools for the upcoming year. However, he had not yet begun working or interacted with any students or families in the district. Legal representation for McGann has not yet been established, and details regarding his first court appearance and current location are unavailable.
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement expressing that while the arrest cannot undo the harm inflicted on the Brink family, it offers comfort and reassurance. She emphasized that law enforcement will pursue and bring to justice those who commit violent acts in the state.
The victims, 43-year-old Clinton David Brink and 41-year-old Cristen Amanda Brink, were discovered deceased on a walking trail at Devil's Den on Saturday. Their two daughters, aged seven and nine, were unharmed and are now being cared for by family members.
Police had previously released a composite sketch and photo of a person of interest. They also stated that the suspect likely sustained an injury during the attack. The state police have not released further details about the circumstances of the couple's deaths. The FBI's Little Rock field office is assisting in the investigation. The head of the state police commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in apprehending McGann.
The Brink family had recently relocated from South Dakota to Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Clinton Brink was scheduled to begin a job as a milk delivery driver. Cristen Brink was a licensed nurse. The family has described the couple as "heroes protecting their little girls."
Devil's Den State Park, where the crime occurred, is a 2,500-acre park near West Fork. The park's trails, which connect to the Ozark National Forest, remained closed on Wednesday.
