Canada’s Summer McIntosh has triumphed in the women’s 200-metre butterfly at the world swimming championships, earning her third gold medal of the competition. The 18-year-old swimmer from Toronto set a new meet record with an impressive time of 2 minutes 1.99 seconds, coming very close to the world record of 2:01.81. The race saw U.S. swimmer Regan Smith finishing second with a time of 2:04.99, while Australia’s Elizabeth Dekkers secured the bronze medal at 2:06.12.
In addition to her butterfly victory, McIntosh had already claimed gold in both the 200 freestyle and the 400 individual medley during the championships. She is ambitiously pursuing five individual titles throughout the eight-day event, a remarkable achievement that has only been accomplished by the legendary Michael Phelps at a single world championship. This latest win adds to McIntosh's impressive tally of 11 career medals at long-course world championships, surpassing her fellow Canadian swimmer, Kylie Masse.
As a result of her remarkable performances, Canada is celebrating a total of six medals at the world aquatics championships, including five in swimming and one in diving. Kylie Masse will have an opportunity to match McIntosh’s medal total later in the day when she competes in the women’s 50 backstroke final.
