A warning has been issued to consumers in the UK regarding the Egg and Spinach Protein Pot from Waitrose due to concerns about Salmonella contamination. The ready-to-eat snack, packaged in a 90g plastic tub, is sold in Waitrose stores across the country and has been recalled.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has alerted the public, stating that the presence of Salmonella in the product presents a health risk. This risk is particularly significant for vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
The recall affects batches with use-by dates of July 31 and August 1, 2025. Waitrose has removed the product from its shelves and is advising customers who have already purchased it not to consume it. Customers are encouraged to return the item to any Waitrose store for a full refund, without the need for a receipt. Point-of-sale notices have been placed in affected stores to inform shoppers of the recall and provide instructions.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting, typically appearing within six to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. Individuals experiencing these symptoms are advised to avoid work, school, or nursery for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have ceased to prevent further spread.
The FSA explains that food products can be recalled if they pose a risk to public health. Waitrose has not yet disclosed the source of the contamination. Customers seeking additional information can contact Waitrose Customer Care. Those experiencing severe or prolonged symptoms of food poisoning should seek medical advice. The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E in specific emergency situations.
