A shooting at an office building in New York City resulted in multiple fatalities. The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, fatally shot four individuals, including an off-duty New York City police officer, before taking his own life. The incident occurred in a midtown Manhattan office tower on a Monday.
Initial investigations revealed that the 27-year-old, who had a history of mental illness, had planned to target the offices of the NFL. He reportedly accused the organization of concealing the dangers associated with brain injuries related to contact sports. However, he mistakenly entered the wrong elevator. A handwritten note left behind by Tamura is being examined by authorities. In the note, he claimed to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma.
Authorities have confirmed that Tamura traveled cross-country from Las Vegas to New York to carry out the attack. He used an AR-15-style assault rifle. Reports indicate that Tamura's father, Terence Tamura, was a former LAPD officer. Records show that Terence Tamura retired from the LAPD in good standing in 2017, after serving in the force from at least 2011 to 2018.
The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the situation. The department is working to confirm details and gather facts. Prior to the shooting, Tamura was employed in the surveillance department of the Horseshoe Las Vegas casino. Questions have been raised regarding his employment in a security-sensitive role, given his documented history of mental health issues and a recent arrest for erratic behavior at another casino. Caesars Entertainment, the owner of the Horseshoe, confirmed Tamura's employment but has not yet revealed the specifics of his role or whether he was authorized to carry a weapon. Tamura was reportedly a talented American Football player during his high school years in southern California.
