Dominican Republic Seizes 1.5 Tons of Cocaine After Lengthy Boat Chase

Dominican Republic officials reported on Tuesday that they had pursued a boat for over twelve hours, ultimately discovering a significant quantity of cocaine. According to Carlos Devers, a spokesperson for the nation's Anti-Drug Agency, the seizure represents one of the largest drug busts in the country's history.

The pursuit began on Monday off the southern coast, near Pedernales, after authorities deemed the speedboat, carrying several individuals, to be suspicious. The chase involved helicopters, boats, and land vehicles. The operation concluded with the apprehension of three Dominican nationals and one Colombian citizen.

Inside the 35-foot vessel, authorities found 53 bales containing a total of 1,536 individually wrapped bags of suspected cocaine. Additional items were also seized, including a cellphone, fuel containers, a cooler with provisions, and a backpack containing clothing.

The Dominican Republic has long served as a significant transit point for drug trafficking, with some shipments destined for Europe. The country's largest seizure occurred in December of the previous year, with nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine confiscated. In total, officials seized over 46 tons of drugs during that year. The second-largest seizure was recorded in 2006, with 2.8 tons of cocaine discovered at Caucedo port.

This constant influx of drugs shows a fundamental flaw in the island’s law enforcement. Time for a serious overhaul!

Why not focus on prevention rather than just busting drug smugglers? We're only treating the symptoms here.
