UK to Recognize State of Palestine in September Unless Israel Takes Action

On July 29, Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that the United Kingdom intends to formally recognize the State of Palestine in September, provided Israel takes significant actions such as agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza. This announcement, which signifies a potential shift in UK foreign policy, was made following an urgent cabinet meeting aimed at addressing the escalating crisis in the besieged area.

Starmer emphasized that the UK's recognition of Palestine is contingent upon Israel's actions by the time of the UN General Assembly in September. He outlined the necessity for Israel to halt the dire situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire, and commit to fostering a sustainable peace that revives hopes for a two-state solution. He mentioned the importance of timing, noting that this recognition should contribute positively to the peace process, particularly as the viability of the two-state solution is currently threatened.

In addition, Starmer specified demands directed at Hamas, which is currently holding Israeli hostages following attacks on October 7, 2023. He urged the militant group to release all hostages, commit to a ceasefire, disarm, and refrain from participating in the governance of Gaza moving forward.
