Beginning on September 2, the United States is set to enforce new regulations regarding visa interviews, necessitating that all non-immigrant visa applicants, irrespective of age, attend in-person interviews. This announcement was made by the US State Department on July 25 and marks a significant shift towards more stringent screening processes for individuals seeking short-term travel and business visas, reversing previous waivers. Additionally, it follows the recent introduction of a US$250 processing fee for non-immigrant visa applications.
As per the updated guidelines, the eligibility for interview waivers during certain visa renewals has been further restricted. Specifically, individuals renewing their B-1, B-2, or B1/B2 visas must have been at least 18 years old when their prior visa was issued to qualify for a waiver. The B-1 visa is designated for business travel, the B-2 for tourism purposes, while the B1/B2 visa can be used for both activities.
Concerned travelers may wonder if these changes will impact their holiday plans. The US Embassy in Singapore clarified that Singaporeans traveling under the Visa Waiver Program will not be affected by the new rules. However, they are still required to seek authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to gain entry into the US. Those who do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program will need to apply for a visa and must attend an interview, which is a separate issue from the changes regarding interview waivers.

This is going to be a nightmare! More travel delays and bureaucratic red tape.
