Midtown Manhattan Office Building Shooting Leaves Multiple Dead, Including NYPD Officer

A shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building resulted in the deaths of a New York City police officer and at least three other individuals, according to authorities. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, died from a self-inflicted wound.

Tamura is alleged to have entered the building carrying an M4 assault rifle around 6:30 p.m. on Monday and began firing inside the entrance. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that Tamura arrived in a black BMW. Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered a loaded revolver, ammunition, and magazines. The building houses offices for the NFL and asset manager Blackstone, among other companies.

Law enforcement shared a photo of the suspected gunman entering the building. The man in the photo is seen wearing dark sunglasses and a dark-colored jacket. Tamura is accused of immediately opening fire on an NYPD officer, 36-year-old Didarul Islam, upon entering the lobby. Islam later died at New York-Presbyterian hospital.

The gunman then shot a woman who took cover behind a pillar and continued through the lobby, firing his weapon. Commissioner Tisch reported that Officer Islam leaves behind a wife who is pregnant with their third child, and two young boys. A security guard was also shot while taking cover near an elevator bank.

At least one other person is in critical but stable condition at New York-Presbyterian hospital. Four others sustained minor injuries while attempting to flee the building. Tamura allowed a woman exiting an elevator to pass unharmed before proceeding to the 33rd floor, which houses a real estate firm.

On the 33rd floor, the gunman fired rounds, killing one person. He then moved down a hallway and shot himself in the chest. Commissioner Tisch stated that Tamura's car had traveled through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and Columbia, New Jersey, in the days leading up to the shooting.

Las Vegas law enforcement indicated that Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues. Medication prescribed to Tamura was also found in his car. Commissioner Tisch described Officer Islam as a hero, highlighting his sacrifice.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed his sorrow, calling the act evil. A witness to the shooting, Jessica Chen, described the rapid succession of shots and the subsequent lockdown. By 7 p.m., people were seen exiting the building with their hands raised. Employees reported hiding in their offices. The FBI and ATF are assisting in the investigation. Subway service was temporarily disrupted near the scene.

This isn’t just a mental health issue; it's a gun violence epidemic in the U.S. Enough is enough!

This happens way too often in America. We need to wake up and demand better legislation.

It’s heartbreaking to hear about Officer Islam’s sacrifice, but we need systemic change in how we handle firearms.
