"Southport's Muslim Community Faces Increased Islamophobia One Year After Race Riots"

Southport's Muslim community remains on edge one year after a deadly knife attack that led to widespread riots in the town. Imam Ibrahim Hussein, who leads the Southport Mosque, shared that there have been six reported Islamophobic incidents to the police since last July, compared to only three over the preceding three decades. The turmoil began when misinformation surfaced about the attack, a tragedy that claimed the lives of three young girls during a dance class and injured others.

The night following the attack, false accusations pointing to the perpetrator as a Muslim asylum seeker resulted in chaos and hostility towards the mosque. Imam Hussein recounted feeling trapped as a mob descended on them, creating a palpable sense of fear. Despite the horrific events, local residents quickly rallied together the following day to repair the damage and extend their support.

However, the past year's increase in hostility has left Muslim community members feeling anxious and wary. Imam Hussein noted the stark rise in reported incidents, highlighting a troubling trend of Islamophobia that has emerged, irrespective of the community's innocence in the tragedy. Instances of hate have included vandalism against the mosque and damage to vehicles, fostering a sense of apprehension among the community members.

This fearful atmosphere is not isolated to Southport; there have been recent reports across the UK of attacks on mosques and rising anti-Muslim sentiment. The charity Tell Mama recently released a survey indicating that a significant majority of Muslims feel that hate against their community has intensified since the riots. More than two-thirds of respondents reported an increase in the perceived risk to Muslim communities following the events of last summer.

The focus needs to be on crime, not religion here. Why make it a 'Muslim community' issue?

No one should have to be afraid to go to their place of worship. We must stand with them.

Police should investigate all sides, not just the "Islamophobia." What were the circumstances?
