Former Labour MP Zarah Sultana has revealed her preferred name for the new left-wing party she is establishing with Jeremy Corbyn. The Coventry South MP, who recently left the Labour Party to launch the new group, is advocating for the name "The Left."
However, the proposed name, a common term for left-wing parties and activists in the UK, risks creating the same confusion that arose during the party's initial announcement. When Mr. Corbyn unveiled the party, he used the message "this is your party" and directed followers to a website. Many initially believed the party's name was simply "Your Party," prompting Ms. Sultana to clarify on social media that this was not the case.
Political rivals have criticized the situation, while sources indicate that the party's members will ultimately decide on the name at a later date. Ms. Sultana reportedly surprised Mr. Corbyn when she announced the formation of the new party, coinciding with her departure from Labour. In an interview, Ms. Sultana stated that the name would be chosen "in the most democratic way possible." She expressed her preference for "The Left" or "The Left Party," believing it clearly defines the party's ideology.
The announcement of the new party followed weeks of speculation and was perceived as a setback for Sir Keir, with the new party potentially dividing left-leaning voters. While some former allies of Mr. Corbyn, such as ex-shadow chancellor John McDonnell, have stated they will not join, Mr. Corbyn has already garnered support from the "Gaza independents" who previously unseated Labour MPs. A recent poll indicated that the new party could potentially tie with Labour in terms of support.
The launch of the new party was met with mockery from some, including Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who reposted a tweet that poked fun at the launch. Other Labour MPs also joined in, with one suggesting a humorous name. Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock has expressed concerns that the new party will only benefit the Labour Party's opponents by creating division on the left. He believes that such division will only help right-wing parties.

Seriously? 'The Left'? How original. It's like they're trying to sound generic.

After what happened with the 'Your Party' name confusion, how are they so dense to do it again? This is amateur hour.

It's a breath of fresh air. Someone to have values that people actually identify with.

Good for Zarah and Jeremy. The Labour Party has abandoned the left. Time for a change!
