Midtown Manhattan Office Shooting Claims Four Lives, Including NYPD Officer

Shane Tamura is accused of opening fire in a Midtown Manhattan office building, resulting in the deaths of four people, including a New York City police officer. The suspect then turned the gun on himself. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch expressed condolences to the victims' families and the police force, acknowledging the city's mourning and the ongoing investigation.

The incident began around 6:28 p.m. when police received calls about an active shooter at 345 Park Avenue, which houses offices for the NFL and Blackstone. Security footage showed Tamura, 27, parking a black BMW and entering the building with an M4 assault rifle. He immediately began firing on the ground floor, striking NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, who later died.

Tamura continued firing, targeting a security guard and another man before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management offices are located. Inside, he shot and killed another person before taking his own life. Authorities believe Tamura acted alone, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Police identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas. He was a native of Hawaii and raised in California, where he was a standout athlete. He possessed a concealed carry license and an expired private investigator's license. Commissioner Tisch stated that Tamura had a documented mental health history, and the motive for the shooting is under investigation.

A suicide note found by authorities indicated that Tamura believed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a brain disease linked to head trauma, and referenced the case of former NFL player Terry Long. Tamura appeared to have driven across the country before the shooting.

Security video showed Tamura approaching the office tower wearing dark sunglasses and a dark jacket, carrying a large rifle. The FBI stated that their systems did not contain prior information about Tamura.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of at least four people, including NYPD officer Islam. The other three victims have not yet been formally identified. Officer Islam was a father of two and his wife is pregnant. Another man was seriously wounded, and four others sustained minor injuries.

The NYPD is leading the investigation, with assistance from federal agencies. Police found a rifle case, ammunition, a revolver, and medication belonging to Tamura inside his car. Officers are still working to determine the motive for the shooting.

A witness, Jessica Chen, described hearing multiple shots and barricading herself and others in a conference room. She stated that they were in constant communication with the police during the incident and were deeply frightened.

The fact that the FBI had no information is concerning. Were there intelligence failures?

This is awful, but I am relieved that the threat to the public is over.

Heartbreaking. A police officer, a father, taken way too soon.

This is terrifying. How did someone with a mental health history get a concealed carry license?
