In the northern Indian state of Bihar, a one-year-old boy reportedly killed a cobra by biting it. The incident occurred in the town of Bettiah, near the Indo-Nepal border. The boy, identified only as Govinda, was playing at home when the snake coiled around his hands.
Witnesses reported that Govinda bit the cobra, killing it instantly. He then fainted and was immediately taken to a local health center for initial treatment. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in the town.
Hospital officials confirmed that the boy was referred from the primary health center after losing consciousness. The venom's effects were reportedly mild, causing only unconsciousness. Doctors stated that timely medical intervention saved Govinda's life.
Govinda's condition is currently stable, and he is under medical supervision. The medical team is providing continuous medication and closely monitoring him. Treatment for potential poisoning is expected to begin if any symptoms arise.
India is home to approximately 300 snake species, including 60 highly venomous ones. The Indian cobra is among the "big four" species responsible for the majority of snakebites in the country. A study published in 2020 revealed that India recorded over a million snakebite deaths between 2000 and 2019. A significant portion of these deaths occurred in a few states, including Bihar.

It's sad that such a young child had to endure this; the danger shouldn't have been there in the first place.

The focus should be on preventing these encounters, not on a child who got lucky this time.
