High-Level Security Measures in China Contribute to Low Crime Rates

During a press conference organized by the State Council Information Office in Beijing, Qi Yanjun, the vice minister of public security, addressed the impressive safety record of China. He stated that the country has one of the lowest rates of fatal criminal incidents and crimes involving firearms and explosives, which contributes to its reputation as one of the safest nations globally. Qi's statements were underscored by reports from the Xinhua News Agency, which stated that public security efforts have bolstered the high-quality advancement outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan.

In particular, the police's battle against telecom fraud during this planning period (2021-2025) has been notable. Senior officer Jiang Guoli reported that over 1.7 million telecom fraud cases were addressed, resulting in the apprehension of 366,000 individuals, including significant figures in criminal syndicates. These operations targeted a range of illegal activities aiding fraudsters, including money laundering and human trafficking, as specified in reports from CCTV News.

Moreover, China has pursued international law enforcement collaboration, deploying specialized teams to countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines to enhance police coordination. These joint efforts have led to the dismantling of more than 2,000 overseas fraud centers and the capture of over 80,000 suspects, effectively combating transnational crime and reducing the prevalence of telecom and cyber fraud. Data shared by the Ministry of Public Security revealed that throughout the 14th Five-Year Plan, police forces disrupted over 590 organized crime groups and addressed approximately 105,000 related criminal cases, reinforcing the country’s commitment to public safety and crime reduction.

The government is just using these statistics to distract us from the real issues in society, like poverty and inequality.

These statistics sound good on paper, but we can't ignore the serious human rights violations in the country.

If public safety is so prioritized, why is there so much mistrust between citizens and authorities?
