Philippine Tensions Rise Over South China Sea Policy and US Relations

Poquiz questioned the value of the country's "arbitral victory" nine years after the award.

Poquiz's remarks were made shortly after the anniversary of the "2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea." He argued that the Philippines is caught in a power play between the US and China, with the victory being only "on paper." He warned against a direct confrontation with China, calling it a trap that serves US interests more than the Philippines'.

The retired general expressed concerns about the Philippines becoming a launchpad for foreign missiles and urged for leaders who prioritize the long-term interests of Filipinos. He emphasized the importance of strategic foresight and critical thinking in navigating the complex geopolitical landscape.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) rejected Poquiz's statements, with a spokesperson describing them as "misleading, defeatist, and alarmist." The AFP emphasized the Philippines' sovereignty and its commitment to acting in its own national interests.

In response, Poquiz defended his remarks, stating his love for the Philippines and his commitment to prioritizing the lives and future of Filipinos. He reiterated his concerns about the country being drawn into a larger power struggle and urged for wise decision-making to avoid becoming a pawn in a foreign conflict.
