Couple Arrested in Macao for Drug Trafficking Involving Concealed Cannabis

The Macao Judiciary Police have recently apprehended a couple from the Chinese mainland suspected of drug trafficking in the Macao Special Administrative Region. The police reported that the male suspect was found to be hiding cannabis within his specially modified underwear, which led to further investigation.

Following intelligence received by anti-narcotics officers, the drug crime investigation unit executed operations focused on international flights arriving in Macao. They successfully identified the couple when they disembarked from a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, on the evening of July 17.

Upon investigation, authorities discovered five packets of cannabis flower weighing about 321.9 grams and 11 packets containing cannabis residue, totaling approximately 333.8 grams, which were concealed in the man’s underwear. Additionally, a search of their luggage uncovered four boxes of cookies, discreetly packaged in regular biscuit tins, suspected of containing cannabis, with a combined weight of 2,818.8 grams, alongside a packet of cannabis-infused gummies weighing 829.4 grams.

Laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of cannabis and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in the seized items, with the total estimated value reaching MOP 656,000 (roughly $81,145). Investigators found that the male suspect, who is known to be a regular drug user, had procured the narcotics while in Bangkok, with his wife's assistance purportedly aiding in smuggling the substances through Macao towards the Chinese mainland.

As a result of the collected evidence, both suspects have been referred to the prosecutor's office to face charges related to trafficking narcotics and psychotropic substances.
