Thymen Arensman, a Dutch rider, achieved a remarkable victory in the 19th stage of the Tour de France. He executed a bold solo attack on the final, lengthy climb and managed to maintain his lead to secure the win.
While the race leader, Tadej Pogačar, moved closer to claiming his fourth Tour title, he was unable to catch Arensman. Pogačar finished the stage in third place, with Jonas Vingegaard taking second. This was a rare instance of Vingegaard outperforming Pogačar in this year's race. However, it had little impact on the overall standings, as Pogačar maintained a significant lead of 4 minutes and 24 seconds over Vingegaard with only two stages remaining.
Vingegaard was unable to distance himself from Pogačar on the shortened stage, which concluded with a 19.1-kilometer climb to the La Plagne ski resort. Arensman had previously demonstrated his climbing prowess with a stunning solo effort to win a challenging mountain stage the previous Saturday.
Arensman launched his decisive attack with 13 kilometers remaining. Pogačar and Vingegaard initially focused on each other and chose not to respond immediately. By the time they did, it was too late, and Arensman secured the stage victory by a mere 2 seconds. Arensman, reflecting on his win, expressed disbelief at beating the world's strongest riders.
Moments after crossing the finish line, Arensman was overcome with emotion, collapsing against a crash barrier, visibly exhausted. He expressed his disbelief and the feeling of dreaming after winning against the strongest riders in the world.
The 19th stage was shortened due to a health concern. The original route was altered after an outbreak of a contagious disease affecting cows in an area along the mountainous route. The stage was reduced from 129.9 kilometers to 93.1 kilometers, with two climbs removed. Despite the changes, the stage still included two challenging Hors catégorie ascents.
The 20th stage will be a hilly 184.2-kilometer route through eastern France, concluding in Pontarlier. The final stage will feature three climbs up Montmartre hill before the traditional finish on the Champs-Élysées. Security measures will be in place for the final stage, with a large number of police officers deployed.

This was just a moment of glory. Pogačar will dominate again soon.

A win is nice, but it feels hollow when you’re still far behind in the overall rankings.

Was this stage win just a fluke? I don't see Arensman maintaining this level.
