On Wednesday afternoon, former US President Donald Trump declared that a 50 percent tariff would be imposed on goods imported from Brazil, starting August 1st.
Trump's announcement was made via a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. In the post, he addressed Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, citing "insidious attacks on Free Elections, and the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans" as the reason for the new tariffs.
This action follows previous announcements of tariffs on other countries. On Monday, Trump had announced tariffs on 14 countries, and on Wednesday, he added seven more to the list. The tariff rates varied, ranging from 20 to 40 percent. The 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods represents the highest rate announced in this series of trade actions.

What about the rule of law? Where's the proof and legal basis for these tariffs?

This is classic Trump – using protectionist measures to punish perceived enemies.

Brazil is a crucial partner. This shortsighted move undermines years of diplomacy.
