Zheng Qinwen, a prominent tennis figure from China, has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the 2025 US Open, which is set to occur between August 24 and September 7. This marks the first time she will miss a Grand Slam event, as confirmed by the official social media account of the US Open. Her withdrawal stems from a persistent elbow injury, which has hindered her participation in recent competitions.
On the same day, the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) announced that Zheng would not compete at the WTA 1000 Montreal tournament for similar reasons. In light of her absence, other players such as Clara Burel and Camila Osorio moved into the main draw, while Zhang Shuai and Wang Yafan entered the qualifying rounds.
Only a few days earlier, Zheng updated her followers on social media about a successful surgery performed on her right elbow, during which she is now in the recovery phase. This injury has been a concern for her throughout the 2025 season, first mentioned after the 2024 WTA Finals. Nevertheless, despite the ongoing challenges, Zheng has shown resilience with strong performances this year, making it to the semifinals in both WTA events in Rome and London, as well as reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open.
Looking ahead, Zheng remains listed in the official lineup for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals set for mid-September, where China will face Italy in a challenging opening match. Zheng will lead the Chinese squad, which also includes players like Wang Xinyu, Yuan Yue, Zhang Shuai, and Jiang Xinyu. If her recovery continues to progress positively, she is anticipated to return to competitive play, spearheading China's efforts in this prestigious team event.
