The United States declared on Tuesday its intention to withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), citing concerns over perceived anti-Israel bias. This marks the third time the US has left the agency, just two years after rejoining.
US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated the withdrawal was prompted by UNESCO's perceived agenda to promote "divisive social and cultural causes." She specifically mentioned the admission of the "State of Palestine" as a member state as a key issue, arguing it contradicted US policy and fueled anti-Israel sentiment within the organization. The withdrawal is scheduled to take effect at the end of December 2026.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay expressed her regret at the US decision, while acknowledging it was anticipated. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar welcomed the US move, describing it as a necessary step to ensure justice and fair treatment for Israel within the UN system.
Li Haidong, a professor at China Foreign Affairs University, commented on the US withdrawal, suggesting it reflects an opportunistic approach to the UN. He argued that the US prioritizes the UN when it serves its interests, but disregards it when it does not. Li further stated that the US is attempting to impose its domestic agenda on the international community, demonstrating the destructive impact of American unilateralism and populism on the UN and international cooperation.
During his first term, former US President Donald Trump withdrew the US from UNESCO, the World Health Organization, the UN Human Rights Council, a global climate change accord, and the Iran nuclear deal. These decisions were later reversed by President Joe Biden upon taking office in 2021.

Another example of the US isolating itself on the world stage. Shameful.

Supporting justice and fair treatment for Israel is the right thing to do.

Trump did it, Biden undid it, now this. What kind of consistent foreign policy is this?

Anti-Israel bias? More like anti-US bias from countries tired of being dictated to.
