In Beijing, a high-ranking public security official announced a notable decrease in severe traffic accidents. The official stated that incidents resulting in three or more fatalities have seen a substantial decline during the current five-year plan, spanning from 2021 to 2025.
The vice-minister of public security, Qi Yanjun, highlighted the positive trend at a State Council Information Office press conference. He revealed that the number of these major accidents has decreased by 34 percent when compared to the previous five-year period, from 2016 to 2020.
Qi further explained the measures contributing to this improvement. Public security agencies throughout China have increased their efforts to identify and address safety deficiencies. These efforts have focused on areas including road traffic, railways, and civil aviation, with the primary goal of safeguarding the public's property and ensuring their safety.

Safety deficiencies? They're finally addressing them now? What about the years of accidents before this five-year plan?

This is a great thing to do! It's also important to recognize the effort in doing so.

Hmm, I wonder how accurate these statistics are, given China's reputation for tight government control and information management.

Road traffic, railways, and civil aviation? Is the decline in accidents spread fairly? I don't trust that report.

They're probably cracking down to cover the real reasons, or to keep their reputation high.
