Representative Andrew Garbarino of New York was recently chosen as the new chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee by the House Republican Steering Committee. He will be taking over from Representative Mark Green of Tennessee, who resigned from Congress to pursue a position in the private sector.
Representatives Clay Higgins of Louisiana, Michael Guest of Mississippi, and Carlos Giménez of Florida. In a statement, Garbarino expressed his honor at being entrusted with the leadership of the committee.
Garbarino, aged 40, has identified key objectives for the committee, including securing the border, combating terrorism, and bolstering America's defenses. He emphasized his personal connection to the responsibilities, citing his upbringing in New York and the impact of 9/11 on his district. He views the commitment to "Never forget" as a guiding principle in his work.
Garbarino has been a member of the Homeland Security Committee since entering Congress in 2021. During the 118th Congress, he served as chairman of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection. He also holds a position on the House Financial Services Committee, where he is the vice chairman of the Subcommittee on Capital Markets.
Representing New York's 2nd Congressional District, which encompasses a portion of Long Island's South Shore, Garbarino previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2013 to 2020. He is recognized as a socially moderate Republican, having supported the Respect for Marriage Act and voted in favor of legislation to establish a commission to investigate the January 6th Capitol attack. He holds a 66% lifetime score from Heritage Action for America.
Garbarino is a graduate of George Washington University and Hofstra University Law School. He is the vice chairman of the bipartisan Italian American Congressional Delegation and identifies as a Roman Catholic.
