Carlos Alcaraz, currently ranked second in the world, has withdrawn from the upcoming Canadian Open in Toronto. The Spanish player cited a need to recover from muscle issues following his loss to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final.
Alcaraz had a successful run leading up to Wimbledon, securing titles at the Italian Open, French Open, and Queen's Club. His impressive 24-match winning streak was ended by Sinner at the All England Club earlier this month.
In a statement released on social media, the five-time Grand Slam champion explained his decision. He mentioned experiencing minor muscle issues and the need for both physical and mental recovery before his next competitions. He expressed his regret to the tournament and his fans in Canada, promising to return next year.
The Canadian Open, a key warm-up event for the U.S. Open, will now be missing four of the top six players in the world rankings. Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper have also withdrawn. Sinner is prioritizing his health, Draper is dealing with an arm injury, and Djokovic is managing a groin problem sustained during his Wimbledon semi-final run.
The Canadian Open is scheduled to begin on Sunday and will conclude on August 7th. The U.S. Open is set to commence on August 24th.

Totally understandable. Rest up champ! Get ready for the hard court season.

Good decision Alcaraz! You need to take care of your body.

Players need to be smart about their bodies. No shame in prioritizing recovery.

Big bummer for Canadian fans. Hope they get a refund for these ticket prices.

I was really looking forward to seeing Alcaraz compete! Such a shame, again!

Ugh! Was really hoping Alcaraz would be able to defend his title... now it looks highly unlikely.
