Zheng Qinwen, the reigning Olympic champion, will not be participating in the upcoming U.S. Open. Tournament organizers confirmed her withdrawal on Monday. The decision comes as she recovers from surgery on her right elbow.
The world number six shared on social media last week that she had been experiencing ongoing pain in her right elbow. This pain had a negative impact on her performance during both training sessions and competitive matches. After trying different treatments without significant improvement, Zheng consulted with elbow specialists and her support team. Ultimately, she decided to undergo arthroscopic surgery.
Following the surgery, Zheng has announced a temporary break from competitive tennis. Her focus will be on her recovery and rehabilitation.
The 22-year-old Chinese player had a successful year in 2023, highlighted by her gold medal win at the Paris Olympics. She also reached the final of the 2024 Australian Open. However, her progress was interrupted at Wimbledon this year, where she was defeated in the first round by Katerina Siniakova.
With Zheng's withdrawal, Leolia Jeanjean of France will now enter the main draw of the U.S. Open. The final Grand Slam tournament of the season is scheduled to begin on August 24 in New York.

I bought my tickets expecting to see her! Major disappointment. At least Leolia Jeanjean benefits.

It's always sad to see a player withdraw, but good for her to take care of her injury properly.
