North Korea announced plans to construct another 5,000-ton destroyer for its navy, according to state media reports. This announcement follows the launch of two similar vessels earlier in the year. The country's leader, Kim Jong Un, has emphasized the importance of strengthening the nation's naval capabilities.
Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch of the Choe Hyon in April, which was identified as the country's first 5,000-ton destroyer-class naval ship. South Korean military officials have speculated that the ship's development may have involved assistance from Russia. Additionally, Kim presided over the launch of the Kang Kon in May, which experienced issues but was later repaired and put into service in June.
Workers at the Nampho Shipyard have committed to completing the new warship by October 10 of the following year. This date coincides with the anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea. The new vessel, designated as the "Choe Hyon-class Destroyer No. 3," is described as a "powerful warship of our own type."
The dockyard manager emphasized the importance of meeting the construction deadline to support the party's goal of building a strong military and protecting the country's maritime sovereignty and national interests.
In a related development, South Korea's new president, elected in a recent election, has signaled a more conciliatory approach towards North Korea compared to the previous administration. The new administration has ceased loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts along the border. In response, North Korea has also stopped its own propaganda broadcasts.
