Mathieu van der Poel has withdrawn from the Tour de France, according to his team, Alpecin–Deceuninck. The announcement came on Tuesday. The Dutch cyclist was positioned 62nd in the overall standings after the completion of stage 15.
The team's statement indicated that van der Poel had been dealing with cold-like symptoms for several days. His condition deteriorated significantly on Monday afternoon. Medical evaluations confirmed that he is suffering from pneumonia.
Following consultation with medical professionals, the decision was made that he could no longer participate in the race. The team emphasized that his health is the primary concern, and that rest and recovery are now crucial. Stage 16 of the Tour, a 171.5km route from Montpellier to Mont Ventoux, was scheduled to begin later that same Tuesday.

A 62nd place standing and now this? Maybe he should have pushed through. Cyclists need to be tougher.
