Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has named Yuriy Lutovinov as the new ambassador to Japan. Lutovinov previously served as the minister-counselor at the Ukrainian Embassy in Japan. The announcement of his appointment was made on Monday.
Japan, a member of the Group of Seven (G7) major powers, had been the only G7 nation without a Ukrainian ambassador. Japan has been a key supporter of Ukraine during the ongoing conflict with Russia. The previous ambassador, Sergiy Korsunsky, departed from his position earlier this year.
Lutovinov, who is proficient in Japanese, is expected to assume his new role as early as September. Korsunsky had served as ambassador since 2020, working to garner Japanese support and disseminating information through social media. Zelenskyy is likely hoping Lutovinov will continue this work.
In a significant shift, Ukraine recently implemented its first major government personnel changes since the start of the Russian invasion. This included the formation of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko's cabinet. Zelenskyy also met with reappointed Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to discuss improvements to Ukraine's diplomatic efforts.
Reports from local media indicate that Lutovinov is one of sixteen newly appointed ambassadors. These appointments include an ambassador to Canada. Furthermore, President Zelenskyy is considering appointing former Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna as ambassador to the United States. This move is intended to strengthen relations with the U.S. administration.

Strengthening ties with the U.S. is good.

Japan's support is crucial, but is this guy the right person to leverage it? Let's see some concrete plans, not vague pronouncements.

Wonder why the last ambassador left? Sounds like a typical political churn.

Hoping for improvement in diplomatic efforts? Seems the last ambassador did a poor job if he got booted.
