Tom Homan, a former border czar, has announced plans to increase the presence of federal immigration officers in New York City, a self-declared "sanctuary city." He stated that this action is intended to address the issue of criminal illegal aliens and is a response to the city's policies. Homan believes that arresting illegal aliens already in custody is a safer approach for law enforcement, the community, and the individuals themselves.
Homan emphasized that sanctuary cities will experience a greater presence of federal agents in both the community and at worksites. He characterized sanctuary cities as havens for criminals and asserted that the current administration will not tolerate such policies. He also indicated that federal officers would "flood the zone" if cities like New York continue to release criminal illegal aliens.
These comments followed a weekend incident in which an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer was shot during an attempted robbery. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that both suspects in the shooting were criminal illegal aliens. One of the suspects, Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, had a history of arrests in New York City and a warrant for armed robbery in Massachusetts.
The Secretary of Homeland Security criticized New York City Mayor Eric Adams for maintaining sanctuary city policies. She stated that the officer's injuries were a direct result of the city's policies. New York City's sanctuary status means that local law enforcement does not comply with requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement to transfer illegal aliens after their release from custody.
Homan clarified that the goal is not to make the NYPD immigration officers but to seek their cooperation. The mayor's office did not respond to requests for comment. The suspect, Nunez, entered the U.S. illegally and was ordered to be removed after failing to appear for an immigration hearing. The other suspect, Cristian Aybar Berroa, also entered the U.S. illegally and has a history of arrests.

Increased federal presence will only create fear among innocent families and undermine trust in law enforcement. This isn’t a solution.

This is just another way to target immigrants who are already marginalized. We need to support our communities, not divide them.

Instead of addressing the root causes of crime, Homan's solution scapegoats the most vulnerable. It’s both unethical and ineffective.
